The conference, which runs from November 11 to 22, is expected to attract more than 30,000 visitors this year. As in previous years, the international negotiations between the countries are the central part of COP29. At the same time, decision-makers, researchers, business leaders and environmental organizations meet in the numerous meetings, seminars and mingles that are taking place in connection with the UN-led negotiations to exchange thoughts and ideas.

The negotiations

The negotiations at COP29 are expected to be centered around financing, emissions trading, mitigation and technology transfer. The Swedish Energy Agency represents Sweden in the negotiation tracks regarding emissions trading (Article 6 of the Paris Agreement) and technology transfer (Article 10 of the Paris Agreement).

– At COP28 in Dubai last year, the negotiations on emissions trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement collapsed. Since then, we have worked intensively to overcome disagreements, so there is hope for a better result this year, says David Newell, who represents Sweden in the negotiations on emissions trading.

New international climate cooperation

An important reason for the Swedish Energy Agency's presence at COP29 in Baku is that the agency is responsible for establishing cooperation agreements on emissions trading under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The goal is to implement mitigation activities in low- and middle-income countries that help the countries in their green transition, while at the same time contributing to Sweden’s fulfillment of its own climate goals.

– During COP29, all the countries of the world gather in one place for two weeks. This provides an excellent opportunity for us to establish new cooperation agreements and take ongoing collaborations forward. At COP29, we expect to be able to sign new bilateral agreements with partner countries in Africa and Asia, which will enable us to start implementing mitigation projects in the coming years, says Sandra Lindström, Head of International Climate Cooperation at the Swedish Energy Agency.

The Swedish Energy Agency is contributing to the global transition

The Swedish Energy Agency's international work includes research, innovation and business development. This involves promoting innovations that contribute to the energy and climate policy goals, for example by supporting Swedish companies in their efforts to reach international markets.

– Sweden is a frontrunner in the green transition and COP29 presents an opportunity to showcase Swedish solutions within various fields on the international stage. This will encourage international collaboration, which is critical in order to accelerate the transition towards reliable and sustainable energy systems, says Niclas Carlsson, Head of International Market Development and Investment at the Swedish Energy Agency.
